Volunteer Projects: Costa Rica Home Garden Completed!

In a small, rural community in Costa Rica, a house had fallen into disrepair. For an elderly couple with disabilities, living in this deteriorating home was a daily struggle. Isolated by the steep and remote location, they were confined to their home for four long years, unable to walk into the community or access basic needs. The roof leaked, and the overall condition of the house made life increasingly difficult. This is where one of our latest volunteer projects began. This effort highlights the impact of volunteer work and the meaningful change it can bring to communities in need.

A Community in Action

A concerned community leader brought the couple’s situation to Medlife Safe Homes Movement’s attention, and we quickly realized the urgency. The plan was to build a new house for the couple, closer to their daughter’s home, so she could more easily assist them with daily necessities like groceries and appointments.

With strong community support, the construction of the new home started. Donations were secured, including electricity and windows, ensuring the house would be fully functional. Over several Service Learning Trips, Medlife Safe Homes Movement volunteers from universities such as Nova Southeastern, Michigan, Florida, Chicago, Miami, Vermont State, Queen’s, and Ottawa, as well as Carmel High School and others, came together to turn the plans into reality.

The Final Touches

The last group of volunteers focused on landscaping, completing the project with a beautiful touch. They designed a charming rock trail and garden, bringing new life to the couple’s surroundings. Though the elderly couple could no longer see, they could feel and smell the flowers, adding comfort to their new home.

This thoughtful addition not only brought joy to the couple but also eased the burden on their daughter. Now, the couple lives in a safer, more accessible home, surrounded by the care of their community and the dedication of Medlife Safe Homes Movement volunteers. The transformation of their home stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through collective effort and compassion in our volunteer projects.
